Scales have gone up 😳
My scale weight was up 3.2 pounds in 24 hours. Here are 10 reasons I’m not panicking about it:
1. I would have to eat roughly 10,500 calories above maintenance to gain 3 pounds of fat. I didn’t do that in one day—and I couldn’t do it in a week.
2. I’ve had a couple of challenging workouts this week, and I’m feeling sore. Increased inflammation is likely, and that’s okay. My body is repairing itself and becoming stronger.
3. I ate some saltier foods and enjoyed a carb-rich meal yesterday, so I’m probably retaining some extra water. It was worth it—I enjoyed every bite.
4. I haven’t been sleeping quite as well this week, and poor sleep can contribute to increased inflammation and water retention.
5. I’m approaching my menstrual cycle, so hormonal changes may be affecting my body and causing temporary fluid retention.
6. I’ve been fairly consistent with my nutrition this week. One higher weigh-in doesn’t mean I need to change anything.
7. My weight will likely return to its usual range once my body settles back into its normal routine.
8. The scale doesn’t tell the whole story about my health. It’s just one data point. My energy is good, my workouts have gone well, and my clothes still fit.
9. Stressing over my weight and every bite of food only adds to my stress—and may contribute to even more water retention.
10. I refuse to let the scale determine my worth. It’s simply a number and a neutral measurement from one day of my life. My worth is defined by how I care for myself and others—not by the digital output of an inanimate object.
